What Is Student Watch?
Welcome to Bedfordshire Student Watch
The Student Watch has been running since September 2005.
The scheme invites new students to sign up to receive Ringmaster messages either to an email address or telephone number.
Messages sent out to students focus on issues that affect young people in the area.
We consider Students to be vulnerable to crime for a number of reasons.
- Often Students are new to the area and living away from home for the first time.
- They may be living in halls or shared accommodation with strangers.
- They are less likely to own their own car and so tend to rely on public transport.
- They will socialise in the pubs and clubs in the town centres late at night, and will have to make their own way home.
- They do not have the day to day support of living with their family.
Students are offered advice on personal safety and home security.
We currently attend the fresher’s fairs at Bedford College and The University of Bedford, where the majority of members join the service. During sign ups students are given a pack of crime prevention advice as well as a security marking kit to mark their personal property. A phone marking service is also available to all students joining the scheme.
It is hoped that this service will be expanded to cover all colleges and universities in the division.
