ARREST FENLAKE -Click to see more

A burglary occurred in the Fenlake area of Bedford last week. One of the items stolen was a Smartwater marked laptop.

Fenlake area of Bedford Burglary Arrest

A man was later arrested in possession of that laptop and was charged with a number of burglaries. The man, who is believed to be responsible for burglaries in the area of Goldington Avenue as well as at the Fenlake address, is currently imprisoned awaiting sentencing.

Bedfordshire Police would like to thank second hand retailers who remain vigilant for identifiable stolen property and members of the public who take the time to inform us of suspicious behaviour in their neighbourhood.

Smartwater is a fast drying liquid that is painted onto property. Each bottle of SmartWater has a unique makeup and the generic product (there are other versions)has been dubbed 'property DNA'.

The principle is very similar to marking your mobile or laptop with a UV pen but is more versatile on those things you can't write your postcode on, such as jewellery.

A household pack can be purchased from Bedford Neighbourhood Watch for the discount price of £20 which, in many cases can be recovered in reduced insurance premiums. To order SmartWater contact Lynne or Ray at Neighbourhood Watch on 01234 275165. If you you have any further questions please feel free to call myself at the Crime Reduction Office on 01234 275273.

SURGERY SUCCESS -Click to see more

VISITORS to mobile police surgeries in Dunstable’s Watling and Manshead wards will get more than they bargain for in 2009.

It’s Paul’s Prescription for Surgery Success!

VISITORS to mobile police surgeries in Dunstable’s Watling and Manshead wards will get more than they bargain for in 2009.

Because while visiting the mobile police station they will also be able to take advantage of free services aimed at protecting their property.

During some surgeries Safer Neighbourhood Team members will offer motorists the chance to have their number plates fitted with free tamper-proof screws under the Car Accessory Protection Scheme (CAPS).

And at others there will the opportunity to get property, such as mobile telephones, satellite navigation systems and personal stereos, security marked.

Safer Neighbourhood Officer PC Paul Ayling said the aim is to provide residents with a “one-stop shop” where they can get practical help to beat crime and discuss issues in the community with constables and Police Community Support Officers.

PC Ayling, who hit on the idea following last year’s successful Pride in Downside event, said: “Although we have run CAPS days and security marking events in the past, this is the first time we have tried to combine them with mobile police surgeries.

“We hope residents will find this a more convenient arrangement and will feel more inclined to come along to our surgeries and discuss with officers any issues or concerns they have.”

They come just days after PCIT officers arrested two men in Rushden and Caddington and seized vehicles and property. They have since been bailed pending further police inquiries.

DS Mark Crone, who is co-ordinating the operation, said: “This inquiry is progressing extremely well and we would repeat out advice to those involved in the burglaries to contact us now, before we come knocking at their doors.”

LOCAL ACTION SUBSTATION WATCH - Click to see more

Bedfordshire Police is raising the awareness of the dangers posed by vandalised sub stations and asking the public to help protect them with a new ‘Watch’ scheme.

Sub Station Watch is being launched in conjunction with Neighbourhood Watch and the local energy provider EDF. The scheme is designed to encourage those living near sub stations to keep an eye out for vandals and thieves.

The initiative, led by community safety officer Sandra Murphy, is in response to a substantial rise in metal thefts across the county in recent months.

Sandra Murphy said: “The market value of metal is increasing making it an attractive thing to steal, which is why places like sub-stations are being targeted. We hope that Sub-station Watch will encourage those residents living near to such a site to look out for damage, vandals or thieves. If you see something or someone, call the police or the EDF free phone number on 0800 587 3243.”

Sub-station Watch aims to prevent vandalism and criminal damage and prevent children gaining access to sub-stations. It also hopes to encourage existing Neighbourhood Watches to take on sub-stations as part of their remit or create new Neighbourhood Watch schemes where they do not already exist.

Leaflets promoting the scheme will be distributed by the Safer Neighbourhood Teams around the county in libraries and health centres etc.

SMARTWATER HITS LUTON - Click to see more

SmartWaterLogoSmartWater – the innovative crime reduction tool designed to help protect property from thieves was launched in Luton today at a press conference led by Superintendent Andy Martin.

A a crime reduction tool under the Safer Homes campaign, SmartWater has been being given away FREE across Luton with 10,000 kits destined for residents’ homes over the next few months.

smartWater handprintBedfordshire Police has brought the Smartwater technology as part of its Safer Homes burglary reduction campaign to help the public protect them selves against crime.

When placed under ultraviolet light the Smartwater liquid glows to reveal its unique chemical signature, which means stolen property can then be checked on a database and traced back to its owner. Police routinely screen all prisoners as they come into custody to check whether they have come into contact with Smartwater.

SmarterWater signSmartwater can be used for marking high value items from computers to jewellery, is invisible to the eye and cannot be removed. Special ultraviolet light arches have been installed in all of Bedfordshire Police’s custody suites which makes screening easy as all prisoners have to walk under the arch when they come in. Any Smartwater liquid on them or their clothing will then light up and glow spectacularly as proof of their crime.

Bedfordshire Police has already started giving away packs of Smartwater to residents as part of their commitment to Luton Borough Council’s SoLUTiONs initiative. Residents living in burglary ‘hotspots’ will also be offered the packs for free and victims of crime.

Superintendent Andy Martin says: “Once offenders see this innovative product appearing more and more they will begin to think twice about committing crime in our area. You never know where this stuff is or isn’t which means you take a chance every time as to whether a house is safe to burgle or not. Once Smartwater is on you, you might not know about it until you walk through our custody doors.”

Street signs promoting Luton as a Smartwater area are also going up round the town on lamp posts to help promote awareness of the product and warn potential burglars that the chances of them being caught and convicted has just gone up.
