Outbuilding are often a favourite target for the opportunistic criminal, and as they make easy targets and often contain a number of valuable unmarked items such as lawnmowers, bicycles and power tools.

They may also contain tools which may be used by criminals to break into the property.

Often the main defence an outbuilding have against being broken into is the padlock. So when selecting a padlock for a shed or garage it is important it is fit for purpose, and is the appropriate size, strength and weather resistant in relation to the property it is protecting.

There are two basic designs of padlocks, the close and open shackle types.

It is recommended that outbuildings are secured with close shackle locks, as they are less vulnerable to by levered open, cut, or sawed apart.

Although having a good quality padlock is important, it is pointless if the hasps (also known as padbars or stables) are weak or in need of repair.

If possible hasps should be concealed with secure fixings or recessed bolts, which will add extra protection.
